Adam Gool - Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory
Welcome to the Nelson Mandela Digital Archive Project. Our aim is to locate, document, digitise, and provide access to all archival materials related to Nelson Mandela. This is a work in progress. Here is a selection of materials arranged in exhibits for your enjoyment.
I must have been five or six-years-old when my dad, the photographer Benny Gool, took me along on an assignment to photograph President Mandela with members of the visiting Gadaffi family from Libya. I think the meeting took place at Mr Mandela's official residence in Cape Town.
I don't recall too many details as I was quite young at the time. I knew that we were in the presence of a very important person. I was trying not to let my dad out of my sight, while keeping out of his way - and watching Mr Mandela - when he called me over to where the photographs were being taken and asked me to join the group.
Mrs Machel was there, and I posed for this picture with Mr Mandela and one of Colonel Gadaffi's daughters. I cannot remember her name. My dad also took a photograph of me with Colonel Gadaffi.
What I remember from this occasion, and a few others I was lucky enough to see Mr Mandela, was his warmth. Although he was so important, and so busy, he always seemed to have an eye out for children. And when he spoke to us, he did not speak down, he spoke as if he was our own grandfather. I think he really loves children.
Quote: "He spoke as if he was our own grandfather."
