It was a poignant occasion; one of Mr Mandela’s last visits to the Western Cape. I was the Premier of the province at the time – it must have been 2008 – and the provincial government was signing an agreement with the Mandela-Rhodes Foundation.
Mr Mandela was becoming a little frail and had begun using a walking stick – though he only seemed to use it to lean on when he wanted to get up; he did not use it for walking.
Although he was not called on to address the meeting, and said very little, his presence stunned quite a large gathering of distinguished people into absolute silence. We were like a bunch of schoolchildren when the headmaster has just walked into the room. Everybody was in total awe of the man; he exuded such a sense of peace and dignity.
I recall that it was extremely hot. But the heat did not stop Mr Mandela from greeting every single person in the marquee that day. And he did not stop there. Frail as he was, he took the trouble to greet every member of the kitchen and support staff.
Quote: "The heat did not stop Mr. Mandela from greeting every single person in the marquee."
