City of San Pablo
Proclamation
Declaring March 11, 1990
As Nelson Mandela Day
Whereas, as members of a multi-racial, multi-cultural city, San Pablo residents believe that any victory against racism and injustice anywhere in the world is a victory for all people, and
Whereas, the city of San Pablo supports fair practices in employment, services, and treatment of all persons without discrimination because of race, color or political affiliation, and
Whereas, the determiined opposition to apartheid by the South African majority and the economic, political and cultural pressure imposed by the international community has forced concessions from the minority government, and
Whereas, one of those victories was the long awaited release of Nelson Mandela, a leader of the African National Congress and Internationally acknowledged symbol of the strength, determination and resolve of the South African people, and
Whereas, while we celebrate each victory resulting from the intense, decades-long struggle against apartheid, we recognize that they are only benchmarks toward the creation of a free democratic and non-racial society in the world,
Now, therefore, be it resolved that the city council of the City of San Pablo hereby recognize the victory achieved in the release of Mr Mandela and other political prisoners and declare March 11, 1990, "Nelson Mandela Day".
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the City of San Pablo to be affixed this 5th Day of March, 1990.
