History

Ehlers played a prominent position in the former apartheid government and was a private secretary to the former President PW Botha. He is a former navy commodore at South African embassy in Paris, and a former Director of the GMR group. He is a cousin of former NIS Director Neil Barnard, an international arms trader and at least up to 1995 also as the honorary consul for Colombia in Pretoria. He was married to Larraine Eksteen. Ehlers father in law lost his coal mine 'Rusplaas Steenskool' to his son Burtie and Burtie sold the assets to Jose Holgado.
