Proceedings of an interview of Mr Ahmed Kathrada by Sahm Venter. The interview about his life, his involvement in the struggle against Apartheid, imprisonment, Robben Island, release and working for the African National Congress (ANC). The interviews start with when Kathrada first received his driver's license driving people around and continues to his personal life his relationship with Sylvia, Bram Fischer, arrest, sentencing and being sent to Robben Island.

Proceedings of the launch of the photographic exhibition " Madiba Public and private" by the photographers Jurgen Schaderberg and Alf Kumalo and the book launch for " The Meaning of Mandela" published by the HSRC. Alf Kumalo shares with the audience on his experiences with Nelson Mandela and the family and later travelling with him on different trips. Jurgen Schaderberg shares his early memories of Madiba as the ANC volunteer in chief, as well as when Madiba was involved with other people participating in the defiance campaign. Xolela Mangcu shares with the audience on the book that he wrote.

Antumbra

A publication on Jitish Kallat’s deeply moving installation Antumbra, presented at the India Art Fair in February 2024. Known for his ability to distill the complexities of historical documents and their trajectories, Kallat’s Antumbra created a compelling pause for reflection as FICA’s seventh Special Artist Project at the India Art Fair. The installation focused on the life of former South African President and anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela, highlighting his long years of incarceration.

Shaping the afterlife of the project and exploring the themes that emerged from it, the publication features a profound exchange between the artist and Judge Albie Sachs during Kallat’s research trip to South Africa. Judge Sachs, a distinguished jurist, activist, scholar, and author, has spent a lifetime fighting for justice in South Africa. Together, they explore the experience of time in confinement and the legacy of Nelson Mandela. The publication, designed by Sukanya Baskar, also includes an essay by curator and art historian Dr. Beth Citron, which contextualizes this latest installation within Kallat’s wider practice.
