The venue for the lecture was Johannesburg’s Linder Auditorium. The theme of the lecture was: Memory, Justice and Reconciliation.

The theme for the lecture was “Building social cohesion”: a call for all South Africans to work towards a united, cohesive, democratic and national society. Dr Ibrahim’s address focused on the need for social cohesion not only in South Africa, but also between the 54 nations that make up the African continent.

The lecture was held at the historic City Hall in the City of Cape Town, a significant and poignant venue, as it is from this location that Mr Mandela gave his inaugural address to the people of South Africa after being released from prison in 1990. The theme of the 2014 lecture is "Building social cohesion through active citizenship". The reception was held immediately after the lecture.
