Nelson Mandela Foundation HIV/AIDS programme: Interview of people living with the disease in Lusikisiki

Interview members of community who are living with HIV/AIDS in Lusikisiki and the reaction they get from members of their families when they discovered that they have the HIV virus. The interview also focuses on how they cope with other community members who living HIV/AIDS and how all of them are treated by the community.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation HIV/AIDS programme visit one of the sites in Lusikisiki the programme manager Dr Connie Kganakga, CEO John Samuel and Dr Heiko Roel visit the village clinic in Lusikisiki and are taken on a tour of the clinic. The sister shares experiences with the Foundation staff and tells them of the programmes successes and challenges. In the clinic there are several activities such as the importance of support groups, there is know your status campaign with people disclosing their HIV/AIDS statuses and the talks that discourage stigma towards the people who have the HIV virus.

A nurse gives interviewers a tour of the clinic and then takes them to one family that is affected by HIV/AIDS, both parents of the two children have died and the grandfather relates the challenges that he faces with the health of one of the orphans being infected by the virus.

Nelson Mandela was the first democratically elected president in South Africa. During his presidential period the country faced many socio-economic challenges with HIV AIDS being one of them. It is only after leaving the presidency that Nelson Mandela was able to give the HIV/ AIDS pandemic his full attention and became a central figure in the fight HIV/AIDS. This collection documents Nelson Mandela's efforts to fight the HIV pandemic in the whole country. The collection dates from 2001 until 2007 and provides insight to partnerships that Nelson Mandela formed with Mede-Sins Sans Frontiere and business in South Africa and to fight the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the in South Africa.
