These photos including two certificates were handed over by Anthony Ho (Ambassador and Taiwanese representative to South Africa), Dr. Wei-ta Pan (President of Soochow University) and Director Angel Y.C.L Wu (Taiwan Foundation for Democracy) to the Chief Executive of the Foundation Sello Hatang during a handover ceremony that was held in the NMF auditorium on the 12th of April 2022.

An international artist Ms Sarah Gusten-Marr donates a painting to the Imbumba Foundation in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Trek4Mandela expedition. The Imbumba Foundation exhibits the painting at the Nelson Mandela Foundation for a short term as part of the build up to Trek4Mandela Expedition launch and send-off 2022.

The roundtable dialogue hosted by the Nelson Mandela Foundation in collaboration with the Public Affairs Research Institute (PARI) and the Wits History Workshop. The dialogue sought to discuss the origins of the Ingonyama Trust and its implications for the people of Kwa-Zulu Natal. The Ingonyama Trust is a land trust established before the first democratic elections in 1994 administered by the Zulu King.

Former Nelson Mandela Foundation Photo Archivist Lucia Raadschelders received the Posthumous Order of the Companions of O.R Tambo in Silver Award bestowed by President Cyril Ramaphosa. The Raadschelders family donated the award to the Foundation.

Struggle T-shirts: Public Testimony and Political Protest' Exhibition

The Struggle T-shirts: Public Testimony and Political Protest Exhibition Photographs. The exhibition is curated by Frances Andrew and draws on the extensive South African History Archive collection of struggle T-shirts.

The notion of using a T-shirt as a way of making a political statement first came into prominence in South Africa during the anti-apartheid movement, and “struggle T-shirts” were worn not only at rallies and political events, but also at funerals, where special designs were created to celebrate the life and legacy of deceased leaders, and at the release of those leaders who were serving sentences in apartheid jails.

Calls for the release of Mandela and others were emblazoned on many T-shirts both in South Africa and the world. Described by Andrew as “a political imperative for which the physical self was willingly placed in direct danger in order to resist”, the struggle T-shirt was used particularly to unite activists during mass protests by organisations such as the United Democratic Front, civic associations and workers’ unions.

However, outside of political protests and rallies these T-shirts also become ordinary, everyday pieces of clothing, which, as Andrew explains, is where “the true power of the T-shirt was activated”.

Lucia Raadschelders Memorial Service

The Nelson Mandela Foundation pays tributes to Lucia Raadschelders, with family, friends, and colleagues. Following Lucia’s wishes, it was a modest occasion, with the emphasis on storytelling. Three of her nine siblings travelled from the Netherlands to attend. Her brother Jan Raadschelders shared reminiscences from her childhood. A number of her former Operation Vula comrades attested to her courage and her deep commitment to the struggle for freedom in South Africa and elsewhere. Close friends told stories of her love for wilderness and the way in which she had made peace with mortality. Colleagues praised her professionalism as an archivist. And the Deputy Ambassador of the Netherlands shared a message of condolence.

A visit by two World Economic Forum delegates Alekhine Veloso and David Conolly and Mpumi Mabuza from Brand South Africa to the Nelson Mandela Foundation. Sello Hatang and Zanele Riba gave them a tour of the Archive. Sello handed each delegate of the World Economic Forum with a copy of “The Prison Letters of Nelson Mandela” book.

Sello Hatang gave them a tour to the archive, the permanent exhibition and Nelson Mandela’s office. Sello presented Marie-Antoinette Rose-Duarte with a copy of The Prison Letters of Nelson Mandela book.

Session one: A roundtable debate about the Expropriation without Compensation ignores threats to the property rights of the rural poor contained in bills before Parliament. The debate was facilitated by Sumaya Hendricks, and key speakers were Dr Annika Claasens and Mbhekiseni Mavuso.

Session two: screening of “This Land” documentary and dialogue on the future of land reform in South Africa, reflecting on the Constitutional Review Process and engaging with the proposed legislation. The dialogue was facilitated by Nokwanda Sihlali from the Land and Accountability Research Centre, the panellist were Emily Tjale, Constance Mogale, Mbhekiseni Mavuso, Nozuko Poni. The audience asked questions and made comments on the documentary.
