The legacy of Nelson Mandela was given wings with the unveiling of the Mandela Day logo by South African Airways (SAA) on the first aircraft of its entire fleet. The new branded A330-200 Airbus, fourth out of six new aircraft, was revealed to sponsors and the media at the airways’ technical park in Johannesburg. AIG Angel Wings Club, as part of its charity drive, donated toys, books and stationery, paid for by members of staff. The donation was channelled through the Nelson Mandela Foundation with clinical psychologist Jonathan Percale, CEO of Tara Hospital, Dr Florence Otienno and other senior staff presents.
On 6 September 2014, right in the middle of National Literacy Week, students and educators at Skeen Primary School in Alexandra township, Johannesburg, celebrated the opening of the school’s Mandela Day container library. The exhibition comprises Mandalas from students from 26 Gauteng schools. It was launched at Constitution Hill on 6 September 2011 to coincide with the Arts Alive festival.
