Afrapix Collective, 1980s, South Africa: [Set of 23 Still Images]

Afrapix was a documentary photographers' collective established by a small group of black and white photographers and political activists in 1982. It played a seminal role in the development of a socially informed school of documentary photography in apartheid South Africa. The group produced some of the most compelling photographic statements on apartheid and the popular uprising in the 1980s.Some nine photographers are represented in this small collection.

Jamaica, 2013: [Set of Three Still Images]

First picture is an activity for Mandela Day organized by Scotia Bank, “Take a child to work” where students were addressed by Mrs. Shirley Hoyana on Mr Mandela’s work ethics.

Japan, 2013: [Set of Two Still Images]

In celebration of ‘Mandela Day’ the Mission identified the disabled as a sector of the Japanese society that is disadvantaged. It learned about the concept of Swan bakeries and recognised the values as similar to those of the spirit of Nelson Mandela emphasising ‘social cohesion’. In this regard, embassy staff spent the morning of Saturday 18 July at the Swan bakery in Akasaka teaching the staff to cook famous South African dishes such as Bobotie, magwenya and milk tart. At the end of the cooking session, the embassy staff and their family members sat down with the employees of the bakery and had a marvellous lunch that had been jointly prepared.

The Caring4Girls programme driven by the Imbumba Foundation tackles the plight of impoverished girls who often miss school during their menstrual cycles due to the lack of sanitary pads.

The aim of the Caring4Girls programme, which is a Mandela Day project, is to ensure access to much-needed sanitary towels so girls may stay in school, and ensure the development and growth of young South African women with dignity.

Nelson Mandela Foundation donates library books to Mapaleni Primary School, 2018: [Set of 3 Still images]

The Nelson Mandela Foundation provided library books for Bushbuckridge’s Mapaleni Primary School’s new library as part of the Mandela Day Library Initiative. Mapaleni is the feeder school to Makhosana Manzini High School in the rural village of Calcutta C in Mpumalanga on the edge of the Kruger National Park, and a beneficiary of a partnership between the Adopt-a-School Foundation, in collaboration with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), and the Department of Basic Education to improve schooling in the poverty-stricken area.

The city of Cape Town Nelson Mandela centenary celebrations. Nelson Mandela Statue unveiled on the Cape Town City Hall Balcony. The Switch-on of the Festive Lights, Adderley Street annually marks the start of the festive season in Cape Town. On 2 Dec 2018 the Executive Mayor of Cape Town, Ald Dan Plato switched on the festive lights at 20:30 where 80 000+ residents and tourists enjoyed the concert, festive lights and video mapping display on the City Hall wall of the theme. On 2 Dec 2018 the theme was: Cape Town, City of Inspiration. Madiba’s life of hope was displayed with the centenary message: Be the Legacy.
