Lucia Raadschelders Memorial Service

The Nelson Mandela Foundation pays tributes to Lucia Raadschelders, with family, friends, and colleagues. Following Lucia’s wishes, it was a modest occasion, with the emphasis on storytelling. Three of her nine siblings travelled from the Netherlands to attend. Her brother Jan Raadschelders shared reminiscences from her childhood. A number of her former Operation Vula comrades attested to her courage and her deep commitment to the struggle for freedom in South Africa and elsewhere. Close friends told stories of her love for wilderness and the way in which she had made peace with mortality. Colleagues praised her professionalism as an archivist. And the Deputy Ambassador of the Netherlands shared a message of condolence.

The Caring4Girls programme driven by the Imbumba Foundation tackles the plight of impoverished girls who often miss school during their menstrual cycles due to the lack of sanitary pads.

The aim of the Caring4Girls programme, which is a Mandela Day project, is to ensure access to much-needed sanitary towels so girls may stay in school, and ensure the development and growth of young South African women with dignity.

Proceedings of the launch of the photographic exhibition " Madiba Public and private" by the photographers Jurgen Schaderberg and Alf Kumalo and the book launch for " The Meaning of Mandela" published by the HSRC. Alf Kumalo shares with the audience on his experiences with Nelson Mandela and the family and later travelling with him on different trips. Jurgen Schaderberg shares his early memories of Madiba as the ANC volunteer in chief, as well as when Madiba was involved with other people participating in the defiance campaign. Xolela Mangcu shares with the audience on the book that he wrote.

Video on Verne Harris introducing the Stengile family that gave the Nelson Mandela Foundation the school photo of Healdtown. One of Nelson Mandela's school mates, Nzimeni Stengile kept the photo in his collection and kept on showing his grandchildren that he studied with Nelson Mandela. The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory hosted a Donor Recognition Ceremony.Tokyo Sexwale and Irene Menell gave Legacy Champion certificates to the Government of India & Vodacom (Pty) Ltd. The Government of India was also recognised for its contribution to the Centre’s building with the unveiling of a plaque at the front entrance. At the ceremony, the Centre of Memory also received a mechanical boost by way of a vehicle donated by Volkswagen SA and a commitment from comedian and actor, Eddie Izzard to a future donation. Izzard is in South Africa to run 27 marathons in 27 days in honour of the 27 years Nelson Mandela spent in prison.
