A publication on Jitish Kallat’s deeply moving installation Antumbra, presented at the India Art Fair in February 2024. Known for his ability to distill the complexities of historical documents and their trajectories, Kallat’s Antumbra created a compelling pause for reflection as FICA’s seventh Special Artist Project at the India Art Fair. The installation focused on the life of former South African President and anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela, highlighting his long years of incarceration.
Shaping the afterlife of the project and exploring the themes that emerged from it, the publication features a profound exchange between the artist and Judge Albie Sachs during Kallat’s research trip to South Africa. Judge Sachs, a distinguished jurist, activist, scholar, and author, has spent a lifetime fighting for justice in South Africa. Together, they explore the experience of time in confinement and the legacy of Nelson Mandela. The publication, designed by Sukanya Baskar, also includes an essay by curator and art historian Dr. Beth Citron, which contextualizes this latest installation within Kallat’s wider practice.
The project and publication are supported by JSW Group, Sangita Jindal, Tarana Sawhney, Sunita Choraria, Radhika Chopra, Roshini Vadehra, and Parul Vadehra

History of South Africa: From 1902 to the Present
Part of Bibliography
South Africa was born in war, has been cursed by crises and ruptures, and today stands on a precipice once again. This book explores the country's tumultuous journey from the Second Anglo-Boer War to 2021. Drawing on diaries, letters, oral testimony and diplomatic reports, Thula Simpson follows the South African people through the battles, elections, repression, resistance, strikes, insurrections, massacres, crashes and epidemics that have shaped the nation.
Tracking South Africa's path from colony to Union and from apartheid to democracy, Simpson documents the influence of key figures including Jan Smuts, Nelson Mandela, Steve Biko, P.W. Botha, Thabo Mbeki and Cyril Ramaphosa. He offers detailed accounts of watershed events like the 1922 Rand Revolt, the Defiance Campaign, Sharpeville, the Soweto uprising and the Marikana massacre. He sheds light on the roles of Gandhi, Churchill, Castro and Thatcher, and explores the impact of the World Wars, the armed struggle and the Border War. Simpson's history charts the post-apartheid transition and the phases of ANC rule, from Rainbow Nation to transformation; state capture to 'New Dawn'. Along the way, it reveals the divisions and solidarities of sport; the nation's economic travails; and painful pandemics, from the Spanish flu to AIDS and Covid-19.

A Plan for the People: Nelson Mandela’s Hope for His Nation
Part of Bibliography
As Nelson Mandela lived and worked under the unjust system of apartheid, his desire for freedom grew. South Africa separated people by races, oppressing the country’s non-white citizens with abusive laws and cruel restrictions. Every day filled Mandela with grief and anger. But he also had hope—hope for a nation that belonged to everyone who lived in it.
From his work with the African National Congress to his imprisonment on Robben Island, to his extraordinary rise to the presidency, Nelson Mandela was a rallying force against injustice. This stirring biography explores Mandela’s long fight for equality and the courage that propelled him through decades of struggle. Illustrated in the bold, bright colours of South Africa, A Plan for the People captures the spirit of a leader beloved around the world.

Zelda la Grange grew up in South Africa as a white Afrikaner who supported the rules of segregation. Yet just a few years after the end of Apartheid she would become a most trusted assistant to Nelson Mandela, growing to respect and cherish the man she had been taught was the enemy.
Good Morning, Mr Mandela tells the extraordinary story of how a young woman had her life, beliefs, prejudices and everything she once believed in utterly transformed by the greatest man of her time. It is the incredible journey of an awkward, terrified young typist in her twenties later chosen to become the President's most loyal and devoted servants, spending most of her adult working life travelling with, supporting and caring for the man she would come to call 'Khulu', or 'grandfather'.
Here Zelda pays tribute to Nelson Mandela as she knew him - a teacher who gave her the most valuable lessons of her life. A man who refused to be defined by his past, who forgave and respected all, but who was also frank, teasing and direct. As he renewed his country, he also freed Zelda from a closed world of fear and mistrust, giving her life true meaning. Now she shares his lasting and inspiring gifts with the world.
This is a book about love and second chances. It will touch your life and make you believe that every one of us, no matter who we are or what we have done, has the power to change.
