The Launch of Mandela Day took place at the Tlatlohang Primary School, a disadvantaged school situated in White City, Jabavu As the emphasis for Nelson Mandela Day 2012 is being placed on raising youth through decent education, the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory – in collaboration with the Department of Basic Education – is driving some of South Africa’s most meaningful initiatives, namely the Container Library Project and the 94+ Schools Project, inspired to improve the conditions of our more impoverished schools and encourage literacy to children within our historically disadvantaged communities.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation pays tributes to Lucia Raadschelders, with family, friends, and colleagues. Following Lucia’s wishes, it was a modest occasion, with the emphasis on storytelling. Three of her nine siblings travelled from the Netherlands to attend. Her brother Jan Raadschelders shared reminiscences from her childhood. A number of her former Operation Vula comrades attested to her courage and her deep commitment to the struggle for freedom in South Africa and elsewhere. Close friends told stories of her love for wilderness and the way in which she had made peace with mortality. Colleagues praised her professionalism as an archivist. And the Deputy Ambassador of the Netherlands shared a message of condolence.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation launched a new strategy for International Nelson Mandela Day, titled Mandela Day: The Next Chapter, at the Nelson Mandela Foundation in May 2019. The new strategy charts a new path for the ten-year-old initiative significantly changing the manner in which it will impact on people’s lives. The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) launch its first commemorative banknote series, in celebration of the first democratically elected president Nelson Mandela’s birth centenary. These notes cover all denominations – R10, R20, R50, R100 and R200. As part of the celebrations, the South African Mint, a subsidiary of the SARB, also issues a new commemorative circulation R5 coin.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation provided library books for Bushbuckridge’s Mapaleni Primary School’s new library as part of the Mandela Day Library Initiative. Mapaleni is the feeder school to Makhosana Manzini High School in the rural village of Calcutta C in Mpumalanga on the edge of the Kruger National Park, and a beneficiary of a partnership between the Adopt-a-School Foundation, in collaboration with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), and the Department of Basic Education to improve schooling in the poverty-stricken area.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation together with its partners the Imbumba Foundation and the Kolisi Foundation launched the #Each1Feed1 Digital Voucher in Potchefstroom, North West Province. The launch was in partnership with Boxer Superstores and Pick ‘n Pay. From Potchefstroom, the partnership team moved to communities in and around Klerksdorp which are suffering from extreme poverty and inequality. A total of 2 000 #Each1Feed1 food packs were delivered, each one designed to support a family for approximately a month.

The Chief Executive of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Sello Hatang awarded the Keys of the City of Florence by its Mayor, Dario Nardella. Sello Hatang was awarded this special honour to recognise his work in human rights and promoting the legacy of Nelson Mandela.
The keys were accompanied by a certificate that reads: “To Sello Hatang, who carries out the challenging and luminous task of keeping Madiba’s legacy alive. We share with him a long history of friendship and the ideal of an open society based on remembrance, solidarity, equality and respect for human rights.”

Distribution was done in Mamelodi for two beneficiaries.

In celebrating the memory and legacy of Nelson Mandela, the Gauteng City Region, City of Tshwane in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation hosted Mandela Remembrance walk and run event in the Union Buildings. The event was held virtually on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 December, with just a small number of people observing all COVID protocols and gathering at the Union Buildings to do a symbolic 6.7 kilometre walk through the streets of Tshwane in his memory and also to remember all the lives lost globally to the Coronavirus in 2020.
