The Nelson Mandela Foundation collaborated with the Socio-Economic Rights Institute (SERI) to launch the exhibition Insurgent Citizens- Reflections on Protest in Democratic South Africa at the Foundation’s Centre of Memory. Nelson Mandela Foundation stakeholder’s event started with a presentation by Sello Hatang Chief Executive on Nelson Mandela Foundation presenting the 20 year’s strategic journey of the foundation. Followed by two dialogues that are in relation to the NMF strategy.
An opening of the exhibition 'Mandela- Gandhi Wall' with Ela Gandhi, Birad Rajaran, Maniben Sita, Virendra Gupta as well as Sello Hatang. The interactive, multimedia display features photographs, QR(quick recognition) codes that can be read by cell phones which then play videos that Birad Rajaran has loaded on to the internet, and a game that visitors can play by answering questions on the back of cards (similar to postcards) and then matching the photo on the card with the one on the wall.

The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) launch its first commemorative banknote series, in celebration of the first democratically elected president Nelson Mandela’s birth centenary. These notes cover all denominations – R10, R20, R50, R100 and R200. As part of the celebrations, the South African Mint, a subsidiary of the SARB, also issues a new commemorative circulation R5 coin.
