The photos are taken inside the voting station whilst most photos of Mandela casting his 'first vote' are taken outside the voting station and are actually of him casting his second vote.

To mark International Literacy Week, Macmillan in association with the READ Trust and the Nelson Mandela Foundation have launched a children’s version of Mr Mandela’s autobiography Long Walk to Freedom.
South African author Chris van Wyk was at the launch, held at the READ Educational Trust in Johannesburg. “I’ve been looking forward to this day – I was very honoured when asked to write this book,” said Van Wyk.

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Exhibition: South Africa

“Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” is the title of the virtual exhibition which was made for Mandela Day events in 2011. The title was taken from the children’s song which Nelson Mandela, in the early years after his release, would sing to and with groups of small children. This exhibition not only highlighted Nelson Mandela’s love of children; his own and the children all over the world but also their attraction to him.

Transnet Port Terminals, in partnership with Mandela Day, have created an initiative called “Shoes on Feet”, which aims to collect school shoes for disadvantaged children in key communities. "Shoes on Feet" volunteers distributed the first donations to learners at Isidingo Primary School in Umlazi Township, Durban, before moving to schools in Port Elizabeth and the Western Cape during March.

"Bikers for Mandela" involved a group of celebrities and a group of motorcyclists on a five-day ride from Johannesburg to the coastal city of Cape Town with the aim to raise awareness about and support for Nelson Mandela Day.
