The departure of the 'Trek4Mandela' from the Nelson Mandela Foundation. This expedition was established in 2012 when Richard Mabaso, Chief Executive Officer of the Imbumba Foundation, overheard a fearful conversation between his mom and niece about puberty. Richard invited his friend Sibusiso Vilane, the first black person in the world to conquer the Three Poles Challenge (reaching the South Pole, North Pole and Mount Everest), to lead him on his first expedition to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. The objectives of the climb were to: Create awareness about the challenges facing impoverished girls in rural and poor schools during their monthly cycles; Raise funds to purchase sanitary towels so that needy girls can go to school when having their menstrual period and to Educate people about Mandela Day and the need to take action beyond 18 July, thereby helping to make every day a Mandela Day.

The 3rd consecutive Nelson Mandela Day Marathon was held on 31 August 2014 under the rules of IAAF, AIMS (Association of International Marathons and Distance Races Distance), and the KZN Athletics Club. The event has 3 races categorized. It starts at the Manaye Hall in Imbali and finishes at The Nelson Mandela Capture Site, Howick. The above-mentioned races each meander through the beautiful breathtaking landscape of uMgungundlovu District Municipality passing historic sites along the way and ending at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site. Runners who complete the race were awarded a unique Nelson Mandela Marathon medal which is symbolic of the day South Africa gained its freedom.
In the heart of the Limpopo farmlands, near the Botswana border, lies the village of Senwabarwana. The impoverished village (also known as Bochum), founded by businessman Stanley Thema, is one of the fastest-growing rural areas in South Africa. 147 learners attending Thabantsho Primary School have little choice but to walk kilometres every day just to get to class. Jade Orgill, Project Manager at Breadline Africa, reported that while she was setting up the school’s container library in preparation for the launch event, some Grade 7 learners explained to her that none of them had never seen a library before – and certainly not so many books in one place.
On 6 September 2014, right in the middle of National Literacy Week, students and educators at Skeen Primary School in Alexandra township, Johannesburg, celebrated the opening of the school’s Mandela Day container library. Afrapix was a documentary photographers' collective established by a small group of black and white photographers and political activists in 1982. It played a seminal role in the development of a socially informed school of documentary photography in apartheid South Africa. The group produced some of the most compelling photographic statements on apartheid and the popular uprising in the 1980s.Some nine photographers are represented in this small collection.
An opening of the exhibition 'Mandela- Gandhi Wall' with Ela Gandhi, Birad Rajaran, Maniben Sita, Virendra Gupta as well as Sello Hatang. To mark International Literacy Week, Macmillan in association with the READ Trust and the Nelson Mandela Foundation have launched a children’s version of Mr Mandela’s autobiography Long Walk to Freedom. South African author Chris van Wyk was at the launch, held at the READ Educational Trust in Johannesburg. “I’ve been looking forward to this day – I was very honoured when asked to write this book,” said Van Wyk.
