Labuschagne Family Collection

Lappies Labuschagne gave his life while assisting civilians to evacuate and inspect the premises where a bomb had been planted. The old apartheid flag which had covered the coffin of Lappies at his funeral was given to the family. On the 23rd of June 2022, the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory hosted a handover ceremony and a dialogue Oppressive Pasts & Healing: From Othering to Belonging. During this ceremony, Lourens and Lorato Labuschagne donated the flag to the Nelson Mandela Foundation in exchange for the new South African flag. This was handed to them by the minister of justice and correctional services, Ronald Lamola at the event. Included with the apartheid flag were three honorary medals bestowed on Lappies. Subsequentlye, digital copies of newspaper clippings and condolence letters were also donated mostly written in Afrikaans and a few in English.

Launch of Insurgent Citizens: Reflections on Protest in Democratic South Africa Exhibition

The Nelson Mandela Foundation collaborated with the Socio-Economic Rights Institute (SERI) to launch the exhibition Insurgent Citizens- Reflections on Protest in Democratic South Africa at the Foundation’s Centre of Memory. Photographs show guest viewing the exhibition and singing in the Auditorium. The event was facilitated by Sumaya Hendricks and the Former Public Protector Advocate Thuli Madonsela was the keynote speaker.

The photos are taken on 12 June 1964, the day of the verdict in the Rivonia Trial. Lionel Shapiro took the photos whilst studying at Wits and taking pictures once a week for the student paper. Nelson Mandela leaving court in a prison van, protestors, Winnie Mandela and Mandela's mother.

The collection consists of 4 photographs - LS001: Winnie Mandela and Mandela's mother, Nosekeni leaving court; LS002: June Mlangeni leaving the court; LS003: The trialists leaving court after the sentencing in a prison van. Lucia Raadschelders Memorial Service

The Nelson Mandela Foundation pays tributes to Lucia Raadschelders, with family, friends, and colleagues. Following Lucia’s wishes, it was a modest occasion, with the emphasis on storytelling. Three of her nine siblings travelled from the Netherlands to attend. Her brother Jan Raadschelders shared reminiscences from her childhood. A number of her former Operation Vula comrades attested to her courage and her deep commitment to the struggle for freedom in South Africa and elsewhere. Close friends told stories of her love for wilderness and the way in which she had made peace with mortality. Colleagues praised her professionalism as an archivist. And the Deputy Ambassador of the Netherlands shared a message of condolence.

South African author Chris van Wyk was at the launch, held at the READ Educational Trust in Johannesburg. “I’ve been looking forward to this day – I was very honoured when asked to write this book,” said Van Wyk.
