Bikers for Mandela Day- NMF staffers, 25 riders and 15 support staff and a group of celebrities on a eight-day ride from Johannesburg to the coastal city of Cape Town with the aim to raise awareness about and support for Nelson Mandela Day.
The legacy of Nelson Mandela was given wings with the unveiling of the Mandela Day logo by South African Airways (SAA) on the first aircraft of its entire fleet. The new branded A330-200 Airbus, fourth out of six new aircraft, was revealed to sponsors and the media at the airways’ technical park in Johannesburg. The collection consists of a report of 3 visits by Dr Jacques Moreillon as ICRC Delegate General for Africa to Robben Island (1973, 1974 and 1975) and his meetings with Nelson Mandela during and after his incarceration. To mark International Literacy Week, Macmillan in association with the READ Trust and the Nelson Mandela Foundation have launched a children’s version of Mr Mandela’s autobiography Long Walk to Freedom. South African author Chris van Wyk was at the launch, held at the READ Educational Trust in Johannesburg. “I’ve been looking forward to this day – I was very honoured when asked to write this book,” said Van Wyk.
