Nelson Mandela Foundation staff activities for the International Mandela Day at Ebenezer, a home for children in Walkerville. The activities of the day included cleaning, working in the bakery, working in the garden, reading to babies and children, and singing.
"Bikers for Mandela" involved a group of celebrities and a group of motorcyclists on a five-day ride from Johannesburg to the coastal city of Cape Town with the aim to raise awareness about and support for Nelson Mandela Day. The bikers were stopping at selected villages and cities, where they participated in community projects and other social initiatives.

Nelson Mandela Foundation staff went back to the Ebenhazer home with gifts and presents as a follow up to their 2010 International Mandela Day activities.
The mural, which depicts hands, was made by staff at the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) and finished by the 150 pupils at the school, under the supervision of the Spaza Art Gallery.
The legacy of Nelson Mandela was given wings with the unveiling of the Mandela Day logo by South African Airways (SAA) on the first aircraft of its entire fleet. The new branded A330-200 Airbus, fourth out of six new aircraft, was revealed to sponsors and the media at the airways’ technical park in Johannesburg. Bikers for Mandela Day- NMF staffers, 25 riders and 15 support staff and a group of celebrities on a eight-day ride from Johannesburg to the coastal city of Cape Town with the aim to raise awareness about and support for Nelson Mandela Day.
150 learners, teachers and cycling enthusiasts convened at the Torah Academy campus in Norwood, Johannesburg, for the 14th annual CycAlive challenge, a youth highlight in the Mandela Day activities calendar. Field Band Foundation from Springs, Rabbi Dovid Hazdan -the dean of the Torah Academy, Dan Zimba, Rabbi Mottie Hadar, Chief Rabbi Warren Goldstein, Sello Hatang, Marlene Bethlehem, Lelo Mzaca, a 702 sports, Johannesburg Steelwings Harley Davidson Club-who arrived to show their support, and Ian Freeman of RAM.
The Launch of Mandela Day took place at the Tlatlohang Primary School, a disadvantaged school situated in White City, Jabavu As the emphasis for Nelson Mandela Day 2012 is being placed on raising youth through decent education, the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory – in collaboration with the Department of Basic Education – is driving some of South Africa’s most meaningful initiatives, namely the Container Library Project and the 94+ Schools Project, inspired to improve the conditions of our more impoverished schools and encourage literacy to children within our historically disadvantaged communities.

Scorpion Legal Protection provided lunch to the Durban Children’s Home Free State Treasury planted trees A baby named after Mandela Moyo restaurant took party packs, face painters and drummers to the Umthombo Street Children in Durban and the Charlotte Maxeke hospital in Johannesburg. They also provided entertainment at a care centre for disabled children in Khayelitsha. Roedean School collected blankets and food for organisations which care for orphans and vulnerable children.
Hands Across South Africa aided the Nelson Mandela Foundation to continue to grow the momentum that legacy advocates like Gareth Cliff have already inspired in order to honour the life and legacy of Madiba, and in so doing make every day a Mandela Day. The event took place at the Phokosho School in Alexandra, Johannesburg.

In the heart of the Limpopo farmlands, near the Botswana border, lies the village of Senwabarwana. The impoverished village (also known as Bochum), founded by businessman Stanley Thema, is one of the fastest-growing rural areas in South Africa. 147 learners attending Thabantsho Primary School have little choice but to walk kilometres every day just to get to class. Jade Orgill, Project Manager at Breadline Africa, reported that while she was setting up the school’s container library in preparation for the launch event, some Grade 7 learners explained to her that none of them had never seen a library before – and certainly not so many books in one place.

Happy Science, a Tokyo-based international religious organisation, handed over a Mandela Day Container Library to Tshifudi Primary School in Tshifudi Village, Vhembe Municipality, Limpopo, in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation (NMF). After the passing of Mr. Nelson Mandela, Happy Science established HS Nelson Mandela Fund as its internal fund in order to advance in the will of Mr. Mandela; aiming to nurture future leaders of the world and support people who cannot receive education due to poverty, or racial, gender and caste discrimination, people who are opposed by their government and people who cannot receive medical treatment.
