Hands Across South Africa aided the Nelson Mandela Foundation to continue to grow the momentum that legacy advocates like Gareth Cliff have already inspired in order to honour the life and legacy of Madiba, and in so doing make every day a Mandela Day. A visit to the Nelson Mandela Foundation by High Commission of the Republic of Seychelles Marie-Antoinette Rose-Duarte and the second secretary of the High Commission of the Republic of Seychelles Terry R.Rose. Sello Hatang gave them a tour to the archive, the permanent exhibition and Nelson Mandela’s office. Sello presented Marie-Antoinette Rose-Duarte with a copy of The Prison Letters of Nelson Mandela book.

The roundtable dialogue hosted by the Nelson Mandela Foundation in collaboration with the Public Affairs Research Institute (PARI) and the Wits History Workshop. The dialogue sought to discuss the origins of the Ingonyama Trust and its implications for the people of Kwa-Zulu Natal. The Ingonyama Trust is a land trust established before the first democratic elections in 1994 administered by the Zulu King.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation with the Graça Machel Trust, Kuhluka Movement, and Zoleka Mandela Foundation hosted an event as part of the "Remembrance period" to mark five years since Madiba’s passing and to recognize the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence.

The event aimed at focusing on purposefully create a caring society that prioritizes women and adolescents and creates the conditions for a dignified life, in a society like South Africa where the murder rate of women is three times the global average and 68.5% of women have experienced some form of sexual violence.

Japan, 2013: [Set of Two Still Images]

In celebration of ‘Mandela Day’ the Mission identified the disabled as a sector of the Japanese society that is disadvantaged. It learned about the concept of Swan bakeries and recognised the values as similar to those of the spirit of Nelson Mandela emphasising ‘social cohesion’. In this regard, embassy staff spent the morning of Saturday 18 July at the Swan bakery in Akasaka teaching the staff to cook famous South African dishes such as Bobotie, magwenya and milk tart. At the end of the cooking session, the embassy staff and their family members sat down with the employees of the bakery and had a marvellous lunch that had been jointly prepared.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation collaborated with the Socio-Economic Rights Institute (SERI) to launch the exhibition Insurgent Citizens- Reflections on Protest in Democratic South Africa at the Foundation’s Centre of Memory. Photographs show guest viewing the exhibition and singing in the Auditorium. The event was facilitated by Sumaya Hendricks and the Former Public Protector Advocate Thuli Madonsela was the keynote speaker.
