The roundtable dialogue hosted by the Nelson Mandela Foundation in collaboration with the Public Affairs Research Institute (PARI) and the Wits History Workshop. The dialogue sought to discuss the origins of the Ingonyama Trust and its implications for the people of Kwa-Zulu Natal. The Ingonyama Trust is a land trust established before the first democratic elections in 1994 administered by the Zulu King.

The Annual Follet Lecture

Nelson Mandela Foundation Head of Leadership and Knowledge Development Verne Harris was a visiting professor at Dominican University in Chicago during its 2018-9 academic year. As the holder of the Follett Chair in information studies, on 16 April he delivered the annual Follett Lecture for 2019 (text attached). The title for the Lecture was A Time to Remember, A Time to Forget: Fred Hampton, Nelson Mandela and the Work of Memory.

Opening of the exhibition 'For Madiba with Love' by David Turnley at the Nelson Mandela Foundation. The event also marked the signing of a Memorandum of understanding between the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the National Library of South Africa for a de-acidification project to preserve Madiba's papers. The project is funded by the US Embassy. In celebration of ‘Mandela Day’ the Mission identified the disabled as a sector of the Japanese society that is disadvantaged. It learned about the concept of Swan bakeries and recognised the values as similar to those of the spirit of Nelson Mandela emphasising ‘social cohesion’. In this regard, embassy staff spent the morning of Saturday 18 July at the Swan bakery in Akasaka teaching the staff to cook famous South African dishes such as Bobotie, magwenya and milk tart. At the end of the cooking session, the embassy staff and their family members sat down with the employees of the bakery and had a marvellous lunch that had been jointly prepared.

The event was organised by the Nelson Mandela Foundation in collaboration with ProBono, the panellists were Lwando Xaso, Sahm Venter, and Albie Sachs. Participants of the dialogue where young South African lawyers. The dialogue started by the panellist discussing their own views on Nelson Mandela the lawyer then followed by the members of the audience interacting and asking the panellist questions.
