These large stone and steel constructions were designed to protect neighbourhoods from sporadic attacks and retain a sense of peace and protection. Of the city's 17 walls, West Belfast's sections are the most visited.

Global Citizen – EP 1

Global Citizen – EP 1 is the fourteenth extended play by British rock band Coldplay and their first release under the pseudonym Los Unidades. The project was made available worldwide on 30 November 2018 featuring production by Rik Simpson and musical guests including Pharrell Williams, David Guetta, Stargate, and others. It was released as part of the lead-up to the group's performance at the "Mandela 100" Global Citizen Festival, which happened on 2 December 2018, in South Africa. All proceeds from the EP were donated to Global Citizen, an international education and advocacy organization working to catalyse the movement to end extreme poverty.

Madiba Honoured with Fresco in France: The largest Mandela mural ever

While South Africans waited with bated breath to hear the results of the May 2024 elections, a reminder of the man who symbolises democracy in South Africa and the world has taken up space gorgeously thanks to a new fresco painting in France.

In Ville de Créteil, Nelson Mandela beams in epic proportion at a height of a whopping 44 meters. Not only is the fresco the sum of talent and breathtaking detail, it is also reportedly the largest mural of Madiba in the world as the Embassy of France in South Africa shared.

Nelson Mandela Statue unveiled in Nambule, Uganda

Nelson Mandela Statue unveiled in Nambule in front of the Mandela National Stadium, Uganda. People across Africa are embracing the chance to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s life in the month of July. In Uganda, a statue of the African icon was unveiled. The statue is a half figure of the African icon wearing his famous Madiba shirt. South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Dr. Naledi Pandor was in Uganda for the unveiling.

South Africa and Uganda have strong ties dating back to the struggle against colonialism and apartheid. Uganda hosted and trained South African anti-apartheid activists and freedom fighters in the late 1980s. Minister Pandor described the statue as a fitting tribute to the strong relationship between the two countries.

Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu window murals in Cape Town at the Civic Centre

The murals were illustrated by Artist Linsey Levendall. His illustrations were based on photographs of the great men by Matthew Willman (Mandela) and Andrew Zuckerman (Tutu). Levendal drew some of Cape Town’s most iconic features into the pattern of Madiba’s shirt, including Bo Kaap, penguins at Boulders Beach, Table Mountain, and a minstrel at the Kaapse Klopse, and the King Protea. Archbishop Tutu’s shirt contained imagery that invoked the anti-apartheid Struggle as well as the core political values of non-racialism, freedom, togetherness, and peace.

Nelson Mandela mural unveiled in Montreal

A mural commemorating Nelson Mandela's visit to Montreal 30 years ago was unveiled in the city's Sud-Ouest borough. It was painted at the Union United Church on Delisle street one of the oldest Black congregations in Canada and the place where Mandela spoke on this trip to the city in 1990.

"My cardboard Mandela statue" is a statue created by Darrell Wakelam for Mandela day in honour of Nelson Mandela. The project was meant to educate and motivate children in schools about the values of Nelson Mandela. Following the hashtag, #AStatueToBeProudOf on twitter, the schools nominated themselves to win the sculpture and the winner was Kelsall Primary School.
