The Nelson Mandela Foundation honoured the 10th anniversary of Madiba’s passing on 5 December with the 21st instalment of the Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture, with Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai as the speaker. The lecture, held at the Joburg Theatre, attracted a diverse audience of local and international dignitaries, who warmly received Yousafzai's thought-provoking address. Professor Yunus aimed at stimulating a robust dialogue and conversation about microcredit, microfinance or social business as a tool to address poverty, based on the Grameen Bank model.

The theme for the lecture was “Building social cohesion”: a call for all South Africans to work towards a united, cohesive, democratic and national society. Dr Ibrahim’s address focused on the need for social cohesion not only in South Africa, but also between the 54 nations that make up the African continent.
