Comune di Campi Bisenzio has dedicated a garden to Nelson Mandela. The dedication was part of the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human rights. The Comune of Campi Bisenzio is a Town of roughly 47000 people and is part of the Metropolitan area of Florence.
The murals were illustrated by Artist Linsey Levendall. His illustrations were based on photographs of the great men by Matthew Willman (Mandela) and Andrew Zuckerman (Tutu). Levendal drew some of Cape Town’s most iconic features into the pattern of Madiba’s shirt, including Bo Kaap, penguins at Boulders Beach, Table Mountain, and a minstrel at the Kaapse Klopse, and the King Protea. Archbishop Tutu’s shirt contained imagery that invoked the anti-apartheid Struggle as well as the core political values of non-racialism, freedom, togetherness, and peace.
Nelson Mandela recorded message for the unveiling of the replica of his statue in Parliament square. Nelson Mandela recorded message thanking the British community for erecting a statue in his honour and British support in the fight against Apartheid. Madiba remembers a joke that he shared with the late Oliver Tambo in 1962 envisaging that one day a statue of a black person’s statue be erected Parliament square in London.
