History
Chief Executive Officer
iKwezi Institute for Research and Development, He was an organizing Officer of the Alexandra Civic Organization (ACO), which has been instrumental in replacing the apartheid government-imposed town council with democratic community organizations. Mzwanele, brother of metal union leader Moses Mayekiso, was a co-accused in the Mayekiso trial for treason and subversion, which was the result of their community and union organizing work. The document was prepared for Mzwanele's visit to Illinois, which will provide a rare opportunity for United Auto Workers (UAW) members to hear an in-depth account of South Africa's black townships from a leader whose release the UAW's efforts helped to secure. Alexandra is one of the oldest, poorest and most militant black townships in South Africa, located next to Johannesburg's most affluent white suburbs. Alexandra has long been a target of brutal repression. Mzwanele Mayekiso and Margaret Mashabela, also from Alexandra township, are coming to the Midwest to help create links between U.S. activists and the democratic, community organizations in South Africa's townships. Their trip is sponsored by the Chicago-Alexandra Sister Community Project, with assistance of the Illinois Labor Network Against Apartheid. UAW Region 4 Director Bill Stewart is one of the Chairs of the Labor Network.
