History
Geographical and cultural context
The Mandela archive is fragmented and scattered all over the world in various places. The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory does not seek to gather all of this under its roof. Instead, the focus is to document where it is and to enter into partnerships to ensure that it is preserved and accessible.

Administrative structure
The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory delivers the core-work of the Nelson Mandela Foundation. The Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation established in 1999 to support its Founder’s ongoing engagement in worthy causes on his retirement as President of South Africa. The Foundation is registered as a trust, with its board of trustees comprising prominent South Africans selected by the Founder.
The Centre of Memory was inaugurated by Nelson Mandela on 21 September 2004, and endorsed as the core work of the Foundation in 2006. The Centre focuses on three areas of work: the Life and Time of Nelson Mandela, Dialogue for Social Justice and Nelson Mandela International Day

Since the establishment of the Centre of Memory in 2004, the collections have been categorised into the following archive groups and special collections:
• Records from the Office of Nelson Mandela (his office at the NMF)
• Nelson Mandela’s personal archives
• Records of organisations and individuals related to the life and times of Nelson Mandela
• Records of the Nelson Mandela Foundation
• 46664 records – these are mainly the recordings of the various concerts and some organisational records
• Nelson Mandela Gifts Collection – gifts received by Mr Mandela mainly from 1999 onwards
• Nelson Mandela Awards Collections – awards received by Mr Mandela mainly after 1999
From the archive groups above and through specific donations, these special collections have been created:
The Photograph Collection ; The Sound and Video Collection ; The Poster Collection; The Ephemera Collection
The Reference Collection. This includes the following:
Anthony Sampson; Foreign language books; Autograph books; Reference books; Audiovisual autograph books; Audiovisual references; Audiovisual tributes.

As these records and collections are organised and processed, the finding aids to them will be made available. This is a work in progress and we would like to hear from you if you have additional information to support our collections work.

Accessibility
All floors of the building can be reached using accessible lifts and entrances to our Reading Rooms. There are accessible toilets on all floors of the building.

Research services
The Nelson Mandela Foundation has a Reading Room where researchers can access valuable historical documents from the archive. The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory can provide research support and fact-checking.
