Move was first made by Labour Councillor Mr David Clyne & backed by the ruling L.P. The Liberals eventually joined ranks with Labour & supported the motion. Conservative group voted against. Mandelas will be represented by acting chief representative of the ANC in Britain, Solly Smith

Zami The Mandelas gain city freedom. NM & his wife WM will be made freemen of Aberdeen on Thursday in their absence. Freedom of the City has been granted to only 31 people this century – Sir Winston Churchill, Queen Mother & Field Marshall Smuts have all been honoured in the ceremony.
