Scope and content

The film looks at the 400 year history of Robben Island from the seventeenth century to the present day. Robben Island began as a place of banishment for social outcasts, lepers and lunatics and in the nineteen sixties was turned into a high security prison for political prisoners who opposed the Apartheid regime. It was given the name "Devil's Island". A series of in-depth interviews with former Robben Island inmates including Mandela, Sisulu, Mbeki, Kathrada and Mlangeni, who managed to transform a seemingly hopeless situation into a positive experience.
