Scope and content
In the 1960s, South African cricketer Basil de’Oliveira, classified as coloured in apartheid South Africa, created a crisis in South African politics when he was noticed by cricket writer/broadcaster John Arlott and thrust into cricket history books. First hand interviews with family and friends deals with the crisis that became a cause when the Nationalist Party government refused to accept a coloured cricketer in the English team for the 1968/69 tour. This led to the beginnings of sport isolation for SA, but not before dirty tricks and collusions had erupted revealing the villainy of both governments, cricket associations and some individuals. Nelson Mandela appears as himself in archive footage.
