President Nelson Mandela and President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda concluded confidential discussions in Pretoria early this afternoon. The discussions centred on the situation in the Great Lakes region.
The President will receive the Vice President of Rwanda, Mr Paul Kagame in Pretoria in the next few days. The discussions will again centre on the issues of the Great Lakes region.
The South African government is in contact with the leadership of the Congolese Rebel Movement. Preparations are underway to receive a delegation representing the movement in the country soon.
Within the context of this broad consultation, the President will confer with President Sam Nujoma in Windhoek on 28 October 1998.
President Nelson Mandela believes that a peaceful solution to the situation in the Great Lakes is in sight. He is hopeful that the meeting of the SADC Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defence which is to take place in Lusaka on 26 October 1998 will take the process forward.
