State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations
Executive Chamber, Providence
Edward D. DiPrete
Govenor
Proclamation
Whereas, Nelson Mandela has been imprisoned since 1964 for his efforts as a leader of the Black South Africans' movement to win freedom and opportunity in their native land, and he is now incarcerated in Pollsmoor Prison near Cape Town, South Africa; and
Whereas, Winnie Mandela, also a leader in the South african freedom movement, was evicted from her home and exiled to a remote area of South Africa for her opposition to apartheid; and
Whereas, the apartheid system of South Africa is contrary to a belief in basic human rights for all men; and
Whereas, the Senate of Rhode Island has joined in the movement to condemn apartheid through legislation passed in 1985 to promote a socially responsible investment policy;
Now, therefore, I, Edward D. Diprete, govenor of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, do hereby proclaim
October 11, 1985 as
Nelson and Winnie Mandela Freedom Day
in the State of Rhode Island and call on all citizens to join with me in supporting the movement to end the injustice of apartheid in South Africa.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the State to be affixed this eleventh day of October, in the year of our Lord, one thousand nine hundred and eighty-five, and of Independence, the two hundred and tenth.
Signed by: Edward D. DiPrete (Govenor), Susan L. Farmer (Secretary of State)
