Bronze and silver medal inside black leather case with gold detailing. Case also includes a cream-coloured notecard, inside a cream coloured envelope addressed to "The Honorable Nelson Mandela." Card describes medal. It reads:
The President's Medal of Excellence
Presented to the Honorable Nelson Mandela on this Twenty-Seventh Day of June, Nineteen Hundred Ninety
The Medal of Excellence was commissioned by the University in 1989. It is composed of solid sterling silver on cast bronze, with a gold brocade on a black velvet collar.
This is the second presentation of the Medal. The first was made to the Reverend Benjamin Lawson Hooks, Executive Director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), on May Twelfth, Nineteen Hundred Ninety.
