Tan coloured certificate inside rectangular wooden casket. Casket is made of Stinkwood and Cape Chestnut. Casket sits on 4 wooden legs and has small wooden handle on both ends. Casket interior is lined with red velvet. Casket also includes key. Taken out of casket for preservation.
Certificate has elaborate pink, green, blue, and gold vine and flower border. Coat of arms of the City of Grahamstown is situated at top of certificate. Bottom center of certificate has red stamped seal of the city. Certificate text, in black, red, gold, and blue, reads:

To pay homage to a man of towering moral stature who, in the service of the people of South Africa, sacrificed a successful legal career to devote himself to the struggle for a just society.
Who suffered imprisonment for twenty-seven years and upon his release, led our country to its first experience of democratic government.
And to signify by these, presentes our city's highest esteem for its ongoing contributions to peace, prosperity, and social harmony among all who live, labour and seek educational and cultural enrichment within our city and beyond.
In witness whereof the seal of the City of Grahamstown is herento affixed this 16th day of May 1996.
