Gold Medal to President Nelson Mandela
This award recognizes the unparalleled public relations service which President Mandela has rendered to his people, his country, and the African continent.
A living embodiment of the saying that communication is the single most important element in strategy. President Mandela has worked ceaselessly to foster national reconciliation and dialogue by bringing people of different cultures and diverse political opinions together, culminatinf in one of the most remarkable achievements of this century - the miracle of April 27, 1994.
President Mandela has done more than any single person to restore South Africa's place on the map as a proud African - and indeed global - citizen. He has personally visited opinion leaders worldwide and urged them to look afresh at the changes in South africa and to assist us in the process of democratization.
President Mandela has embraced the very spirit of communication through his relaxed and informal style, his frequent interactions with people at grassroots level, and his enviable relationship with locan and international media.
While he was in prison, he overcame almost insurmountable obstacles to communicate his ideal of freedom and justice. Since his release he has redoubled his efforts in this same cause with the result that South Africa is now regarded as a shining example to the rest of Africa.
