Long, narrow white certificate, taken out of frame for preservation. Poster is colourful, and includes images of the City of Cape Town flag, South African flag, Robben Island, and Union Buildings. Certificate, in black, blue, red, and gold text, reads:
At a time in our country's history when a statesman was sorely needed, you emerged as the single most unifying force in South Africa. You have set an example, both nationally and internationally, as a leader with authority and compassion - one who is able to talk to world leaders and yet remain close to ordinary people. In your time of public office, you have transcended the role of party political leader to become a national and international stateman who commands the respect and affection of all South Africans and people all over the world.
Cape Town, the Mother City, and legislative capital of South Africa has been closely associated with your life and gratefully acknowledges you as a citizen of Cape Town.
From your years on Robben Island as the world's most famous political prisoner and fighter for freedom to your presidency in, your stature and influence have shaped the destiny of our city.
For your unique contribution to the political reconstruction of our country and the vital role which you have played in unifying a divided South Africa in recognition of which you received the Nobel Peace Prize the city of Cape Town is privileged to confer on you, President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela the highest civic honour, the freedom of Cape Town, given on this 27th day of November 1997.
Your long walk to freedom ended here in our city. In honouring you with the freedom of the City, the people of Cape Town recognize your struggle for non-racialism and democracy, your strength of spirit, your courage to endure and your determination to achieve a dream. As a symbol of fortitude and hope, you stand as an inspiration to us all.
