Certificate comprised of 2 sheets of cream-coloured paper, folded, with gold rope divider (creating 8 pages), in blue folder with gold engraved "The Australian National University" and university logo. Gold rope extends around the binding with an attached gold tassel. Taken out of folder for Preservation
First page of certificate includes the blue, silver, and gold seal of the university, and "The Australian National University" and "Canberra." Pages 2 & 3 are blank. Page 4 & 5 include the "citation for an honorary degree." These pages, in black text, read:
Mr Chancellor, it is my privilege to present to you for a degree of this University, Mr Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, former State President of South Africa, Nobel Laureate for Peace, Chancellor of the University of the North, freedom fighter, African National Congress leader, lawyer, and statesman.
