Biographical history

Dr Bhupen Hazarika was a social thinker and "griot" from northeast India. As a lyricist, musician, and singer he is known for songs based on the themes of communal amity, universal justice and empathy.

Archival history

The song Jindabad Mandela was composed and sung by Padma Vibhushan Dr Bhupen Hazarika in honour of Nelson Mandela. It was first sung in the presence of Mr Mandela at an open stadium when Mandela visited Kolkata, India, in 1990.
The song was collected by the Dr Bhupen Hazarika Literary & Cultural Forum (BHLCF) and sourced to the NMF on 23 October 2012 to be archived at the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory and the Nelson Mandela Digital Archive.
