The Nelson Mandela Foundation launched a new strategy for International Nelson Mandela Day, titled Mandela Day: The Next Chapter, at the Nelson Mandela Foundation in May 2019. The new strategy charts a new path for the ten-year-old initiative significantly changing the manner in which it will impact on people’s lives. The launch was attended by stakeholders from global organisations, corporate South Africa and civil society organisations - among them, the United Nations, Habitat for Humanity, Vodacom, early childhood development practitioners and national celebrities.

The fifth anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s passing away; a dialogue on the media coverage of the Nelson Mandela’s passing held at Nelson Mandela Foundation. The dialogue was facilitated by Tim Modise a veteran journalist, the panellist were Thabo Masebe Gauteng spokesperson, Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) at the time of Mandela’s passing, Sally Burdett head of eNCA news anchor team, Milton Nkosi, British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Africa bureau chief, Angie Kapelianis South African Broadcasting Corporation national radio current affairs editor, Mondli Makhanya City Press editor-in-chief, and Leanne Manas South African TV presenter and media personality. The audience shared their memories of the day and made statements regarding Nelson Mandela leadership and his role in media.

The event was headlined by internationally renowned author and activist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. The Nelson Mandela Foundation pays tributes to Lucia Raadschelders, with family, friends, and colleagues. Following Lucia’s wishes, it was a modest occasion, with the emphasis on storytelling. Three of her nine siblings travelled from the Netherlands to attend. Her brother Jan Raadschelders shared reminiscences from her childhood. A number of her former Operation Vula comrades attested to her courage and her deep commitment to the struggle for freedom in South Africa and elsewhere. Close friends told stories of her love for wilderness and the way in which she had made peace with mortality. Colleagues praised her professionalism as an archivist. And the Deputy Ambassador of the Netherlands shared a message of condolence.

A workshop on Grassroots Organisation by Brand South Africa and Marketing Association of South Africa Masterclass held at the Nelson Mandela Foundation. The masterclass took place in the auditorium followed by a dialogue on Grassroots and Land facilitated by Sumaya Hendricks of the NMF.

The Caring4Girls programme driven by the Imbumba Foundation tackles the plight of impoverished girls who often miss school during their menstrual cycles due to the lack of sanitary pads.
