The photos are taken on 12 June 1964, the day of the verdict in the Rivonia Trial. Lionel Shapiro took the photos whilst studying at Wits and taking pictures once a week for the student paper. Nelson Mandela leaving court in a prison van, protestors, Winnie Mandela and Mandela's mother.

The collection consists of 4 photographs - LS001: Winnie Mandela and Mandela's mother, Nosekeni leaving court; LS002: June Mlangeni leaving the court; LS003: The trialists leaving court after the sentencing in a prison van. Mandela is the first person on the left in the van; and LS004: A supporter outside the court with placard "We are proud of our leaders".

This item consists of an envelope addressed to the legal firm of Pillay Seedat & Co. For security reasons, Judge Pillay had a family member mail an empty envelope to the firm. This precaution was taken to protect Mac Maharaj and Judge Pillay in the event of an interrogation by Security Police. Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Exhibition: South Africa

“Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” is the title of the virtual exhibition which was made for Mandela Day events in 2011. The title was taken from the children’s song which Nelson Mandela, in the early years after his release, would sing to and with groups of small children. This exhibition not only highlighted Nelson Mandela’s love of children; his own and the children all over the world but also their attraction to him.

Nelson Mandela interviewed on the South African traditional leaders from the frontier wars that took place in South Africa. Nelson Mandela hails one of the wisdom and bravery fighters such as Siqungathi , Makhado and Mampuru being the good at warfare as well as guerrilla tactics. In the interview Nelson Mandela mentions how the missionaries helped in the educating the new generation of leaders like Seme, Xuma himself and Oliver R. Tambo and all his other comrades were products of missionary education but not of the government of South Africa at the time. Talks about strategies with that they engaged in the struggle against Apartheid.

Nelson Mandela message on Emerging voices, a study that focuses on rural communities participating in highlighting the challenges that they are facing regarding rural schools and education. Madiba thanks the communities for their participation and mentions that education provides people with life skills that provide people with life changing opportunities. The study seeks to address and overcome the challenges in the quality of education that prevail in rural area and rural poverty as opposed to the urban areas. The message was first played in a rural education event in Limpopo
