On 6 September 2014, right in the middle of National Literacy Week, students and educators at Skeen Primary School in Alexandra township, Johannesburg, celebrated the opening of the school’s Mandela Day container library. The library is the 49th facility of it kind to open since the launch of the Mandela Day container library project in 2012.

President Michelle Bachelet of Chile, presenting the 12th Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture on 9 August 2014. This event marks the 52nd anniversary of Mr Mandela’s capture on 5 August 1962. The lecture was held at the historic City Hall in the City of Cape Town, a significant and poignant venue, as it is from this location that Mr Mandela gave his inaugural address to the people of South Africa after being released from prison in 1990. The theme of the 2014 lecture is "Building social cohesion through active citizenship". The reception was held immediately after the lecture.
Scores of volunteers joined Vodacom staff at Vodaworld in Midrand assisting with the task of providing 17 000 food parcels for distribution to families in need. Volunteers came from, amongst others, the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Blue Bulls, Orlando Pirates, Gauteng Department of Education.

In the heart of the Limpopo farmlands, near the Botswana border, lies the village of Senwabarwana. The impoverished village (also known as Bochum), founded by businessman Stanley Thema, is one of the fastest-growing rural areas in South Africa. 147 learners attending Thabantsho Primary School have little choice but to walk kilometres every day just to get to class. Jade Orgill, Project Manager at Breadline Africa, reported that while she was setting up the school’s container library in preparation for the launch event, some Grade 7 learners explained to her that none of them had never seen a library before – and certainly not so many books in one place.

The Great Park Synagoge hosted a 67 minutes drive to collect blankets, clothes and non-perishable foods. The Friends of the Inner City spent 67 minutes cleaning Lorna Court in Johannesburg's CBD as part of their ‘ Build your Neighbourhood’ initiative. The Conference Connection donated food and gifts to St Martins’ Children’s home and blankets to Reservoir Hills residents in Durban The DEC planted trees. Scorpion Legal Protection provided lunch to the Durban Children’s Home Free State Treasury planted trees A baby named after Mandela Moyo restaurant took party packs, face painters and drummers to the Umthombo Street Children in Durban and the Charlotte Maxeke hospital in Johannesburg. They also provided entertainment at a care centre for disabled children in Khayelitsha. Roedean School collected blankets and food for organisations which care for orphans and vulnerable children.
The ninth of eleven children born to political activists Ebrahim and Fatima Asvat, Amina Cachalia's political activism and championing of women's rights was almost a preordained path with her father's connection with Mahatma Gandhi, a family tradition that started with her father's explanation of racial discrimination. When hope and history rhyme explores Amina's remarkable life from her early childhood to the women's march on the Union Buildings in Pretoria on 9 August 1956, to her banning, in 1962, for 15 years, and the trials and tribulations when her husband, Yusuf, was placed under house arrest for 25 years. The title includes details of Amina's close relationship with Nelson Mandela, from their first meeting to their poignant encounters after his release from prison in 1990.

Hands Across South Africa aided the Nelson Mandela Foundation to continue to grow the momentum that legacy advocates like Gareth Cliff have already inspired in order to honour the life and legacy of Madiba, and in so doing make every day a Mandela Day. The event took place at the Phokosho School in Alexandra, Johannesburg.

Chancellor House, the former site of Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo’s law firm, is in the background.The sculpture portrays Nelson Mandela as a young amateur boxer, and is based on a famous picture by photographer Bob Gosani. The Shadow Boxer was commissioned by the Johannesburg Development Agency in partnership with the City of Jobannesburg.
The collection was curated and will be exhibited around the world and eventually be auctioned by the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital Trust to raise funds. Many more than 95 posters were received and plans are under way to produce a limited edition publication.
Jack Swart was Mr Mandela's warder and chef from 7 Dec 1988 to 11 Feb 1990 at Victor Verster Prison. This collection includes notes by Mandela to Swart, correspondence, photographs, recipes and menus of the food Swart cooked for Mandela, and a manuscript of Swart's life story in Afrikaans. It includes a video clip of the drive from the Victor Verster House to the prison gates that Mandela would have taken on 11 Feb 1990 when he was released.

Photos of a dialogue held at Glenhove Conference Centre, Johannesburg, facilitated by the Nelson Mandela Foundation in partnership with Brand South Africa. Africa-European economic relations and the challenge of overcoming financial and political alienation was the focus of the dialogue. Participants included Finnish Minister of European Affairs and Foreign Trade, Dr. Alex Stubb, who led the discussion, and Master of Ceremonies for the event, Dr.Petrus de Kock from Brand South Africa.
