Folded cream coloured certificate housed inside a dark brown lacquered wooden box with red felt interior.Taken out of box for preservation. Bos has white and brown seal of the University along with the words, "Degree of Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) Awarded to Dr Nelson Mandela". Top folded portion of the certificate has the seal of the university and the words "Banaras Hindu University" In Hindi and English.
Certificate is divided into three parts. The first two (top and middle) sections are in Hindi.
All three sections have a stamped seal of the university (woman playing a guitar near a lake with a swan).
The third section is in English.Text is in purple and reads:

Doctor of Laws
The academic Council of the Banaras Hindu University hereby confers the Degree of "Doctor of Laws" Honoris Causa on Sri Nelson Mandela in recognition of his eminent position and attanments.
