President Michelle Bachelet of Chile, presenting the 12th Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture on 9 August 2014. This event marks the 52nd anniversary of Mr Mandela’s capture on 5 August 1962. The lecture was held at the historic City Hall in the City of Cape Town, a significant and poignant venue, as it is from this location that Mr Mandela gave his inaugural address to the people of South Africa after being released from prison in 1990. The theme of the 2014 lecture is "Building social cohesion through active citizenship". The reception was held immediately after the lecture.

Cycalive was launched by Torah Academy, Moletsane High and Tladi Technical in 1998. Cycalive is an event for Grade 11 students of different cultural and religious backgrounds. A public launch by the Nelson Mandela Foundation held at the Donaldson Orlando Community Centre (now called YMCA). The Foundation launched a logo that will be the symbol of all the Nelson Mandela centenary activities. Seven schools were invited to the launch.
The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory hosted a Donor Recognition Ceremony.Tokyo Sexwale and Irene Menell gave Legacy Champion certificates to the Government of India & Vodacom (Pty) Ltd. The Government of India was also recognised for its contribution to the Centre’s building with the unveiling of a plaque at the front entrance. At the ceremony, the Centre of Memory also received a mechanical boost by way of a vehicle donated by Volkswagen SA and a commitment from comedian and actor, Eddie Izzard to a future donation. Izzard is in South Africa to run 27 marathons in 27 days in honour of the 27 years Nelson Mandela spent in prison.
