The Chief Executive of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Sello Hatang awarded the Keys of the City of Florence by its Mayor, Dario Nardella. Sello Hatang was awarded this special honour to recognise his work in human rights and promoting the legacy of Nelson Mandela.
The keys were accompanied by a certificate that reads: “To Sello Hatang, who carries out the challenging and luminous task of keeping Madiba’s legacy alive. We share with him a long history of friendship and the ideal of an open society based on remembrance, solidarity, equality and respect for human rights.”

The Nelson Mandela Foundation provided library books for Bushbuckridge’s Mapaleni Primary School’s new library as part of the Mandela Day Library Initiative. Mapaleni is the feeder school to Makhosana Manzini High School in the rural village of Calcutta C in Mpumalanga on the edge of the Kruger National Park, and a beneficiary of a partnership between the Adopt-a-School Foundation, in collaboration with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), and the Department of Basic Education to improve schooling in the poverty-stricken area.

In celebration of ‘Mandela Day’ the Mission identified the disabled as a sector of the Japanese society that is disadvantaged. It learned about the concept of Swan bakeries and recognised the values as similar to those of the spirit of Nelson Mandela emphasising ‘social cohesion’. In this regard, embassy staff spent the morning of Saturday 18 July at the Swan bakery in Akasaka teaching the staff to cook famous South African dishes such as Bobotie, magwenya and milk tart. At the end of the cooking session, the embassy staff and their family members sat down with the employees of the bakery and had a marvellous lunch that had been jointly prepared.
The company Regal Distributors in Linbro Business Park (Johannesburg), donated food boxes for Mandela Day. The NMF delivered the boxes to Thusong Care Centre in Alexandra and Club Care Centre in Orlando West, Soweto.
* The week of 12- 17 September 2016 was marked Clean-up & Recycle SA week, the aim of the week is to increase awareness in South Africans of the many benefits of recycling (socially, environmentally and economically) and the importance of a litter-free environment. As part of International Coastal Clean-up Day on Saturday 17th of September, PETCO partnered with Plastics * SA and 140 enthusiastic volunteers to clean up Robben Island in memory of Nelson Mandela.
